Next University (or NextU) is an online place where you can learn the skills you need to get a better job. For now, we are focused on building the best technical courses in the world to help you learn web development and design, Java programing, iPhone and Android application programming, and computer network administration. We are working with the largest employers in Latin America to make sure we are creating instruction for the right skills and for the most in-demand jobs.
What’s a course like? Are they just boring lectures?
No way! Our certificate programs are designed to take about a year of study. That assumes you’re spending 7-10 hours per week on your studies. Each of our certificate programs contains 12 courses (each 1 month long), and we’ve made sure they aren’t boring. Each course contains videos from some of the world’s best teachers and programmers. And, each course focuses on actually creating fun projects. For example, when you finish the Web Development and Design certificate you will have created your own portfolio website with all the “bells and whistles”. That’s the website you’re going to use to show off your skills to potential employers!
I work full time, can I fit this class into my busy schedule?
Absolutely! We recommend setting aside about an hour a day to engage with the course materials, but you can shift this around depending on your weekly schedule. Many of our students find they can’t devote an hour a day but can do larger chunks of time over the weekend – this is totally fine! Our material is always available for you when you need it.
What if I get behind…will there be a problem?
No! We’ve built the learning so you can go at your own pace. Each unit should take about one month to complete. However, if you need more time, simply log back in and pick up where you left off. But, try to keep a good pace. You don’t want to forget what you have learned!
I am looking to transition into a more technical role at work or I’d like to get a better job. Will these certificates help me?
Yes! The skills taught in the certificate programs are some of the most valuable and sought after by employers. HTML & CSS are the foundation upon which much of the rest of your technology education can be based, and Java is one of the top ten most in-demand skills according to hiring managers. Similarly, demand for iOS and Android skills is booming. And, the networking company Cisco anticipates there will be 3 open jobs in networking for every 1 filled. There are many places to start, but these certificates contain the most important skills to set you up for success in your career transition. In addition, building projects from scratch touches a wide variety of the most common web technologies and terms and gives you a solid understanding from which to continue on your professional transition.
What are the system requirements for this class?
Nothing fancy! You just need a computer with good access to the web, of course. Your laptop or computer should be able to stream Youtube or Vimeo and download and upload class materials. We do recommend Macs for the class and for your future web development projects as they tend to be the industry standard, but you will be fine with any brand of computer.
What previous knowledge to I need to have to take this class?
None! As long as you are familiar with your computer and how to use it and are comfortable on the web, we will teach you the rest.
Do you provide any printable materials or downloads I can access?
Of course! Every course has cheat sheets, videos, audio, and other materials you can download or print. Sometimes these materials are handy to keep nearby for reference. In other cases you may want to put them on your smart phone and listen to them on the way to work or on a quick break.
When does the class meet?
There are no classes and no fixed times. You can pick whatever time works for you! If it works better for you to take more time for your own learning on the weekends, that is great. If you want to study and build your projects a little every night, that’s perfect. You are in control of your learning.
Help! How do I get help?
We have a network of mentors available to support you throughout your learning. They are experts and they are online to help you. Just type your question into the chat box. If one of our mentors is online, he or she will try to answer your question immediately. If it is really late and we are all asleep, we will get back to you the next day. Look for a notice in your inbox. Additionally, if you have a really tough question, one of the mentors may schedule time with you on Google Hangout or Skype to walk through various solutions. Finally, don’t forget about all the cheat sheets and tutorials we’ve included in the course. Always check those before reaching out to a mentor.
How does having a subscription to Next University work?
When you subscribe, you will have full access to any of the Certificates (and their courses) that NextU provides. You can fly through one Certificate program as quickly as your skills allow and then immediately jump into a new one. Or you can take the courses for any two Certificates programs at one time. We discourage students from taking more than two courses at a time because research has shown that students do not do well with too many courses going on at once. We want you to be successful!
How do I pay for my subscription?
You need a credit card or PayPal account to sign up. You can pay upfront for the subscription and receive a discount or you can pay in 3 installments.
How do the Certificates work?
If you successfully complete the assignments and assessments for each of the 12 units for a Certificate program, Next University will issue you a certified document from NextU that you can share with a potential employer or include in your portfolio. We will also provide a unique code with your certificate that employers can use to verify the certificate online.
